I’m back in Boulder.
At 11:00 am on Thursday the 15th Ryan and I safely road into Boulder. We were met in south Boulder by a group of loving friends and family. While reuniting with Boulder we road our bikes all over town honking our horns and ringing our bells with delight. What an amazing trip this has been I can hardly believe that I’m back. Thanks folks for checking my blog site. Ryan and I would never have maid it with out all kindness and generosity from people like you.

Riding north of Walsenburg on I-25, we encountered our first snow. The road however was not slick, I-25 is well maintained and has a huge shoulder, which makes it good for riding.

Ryan and I got an early start the day we crossed the Colorado boarder. Raton pass turned out to be more beautiful then difficult. From the top of this 7,000 ft. high pass the landscape is transforms from New Mexico becoming covered by alpine bushes pine and fur trees, white capped 14’s looming to the north. Even southern Colorado reminds me of home.

This husband wife team runs the best bagel shop south of Boulder. They like T or C and told us the history of How Truth or Consequences got it's name. A T.V. show in the 1950's offered to pay any town in American if they would change there name. They would also host the T.V. in this town. So what was Hot Springs New Mexico became T or C and they still have great hot springs.

Yeeehaaaa...We made it to Juárez. It might not be the Paris of Europe but after this day it feels like it. Tomarrow we're going to walk our bike 3 blocks from our hotel and cross over to the good old USA… by by Mexico it's been fun.

Leaving Villa Ahumada we knew that we had a big day to get to Juarez and we didn’t need the winds help so we headed out at 7:00am our earliest start time yet. At that time things are calmer and colder in the desert. I got all bundled up and put socks on my hands for warmth.

The next day seemed calm so we busted out an easy 40 miles before you guessed it, the wind thing again. The next 40 miles to El Sueco (The Swede) where grueling. We made friends with Rodriego the owner of El Sueco.(it's gas station with a resturant) He hooked us up with a bed to sleep in and all the burritos we could eat. Uhh… I think I ate too much.

We couldn’t have picked a worse time to leave Chihuahua. It had been calm and sunny for the previous four days while we lounged around lost in Chihuahua time. The day we left it was seriously windy, gusts of over 50 miles an hour pounded us with sand and dirt. When we finally stopped at a Chili farm 40 Kilometers out of town, we sand and dirt coated our bodies.

We were very excited to get to the city of Chihuahua. The home of Poncho Villa and great bars. Poncho Villa was a very important general in the Mexican revolution in the early 1900’s. The most impressive thing he did (Besides having over fifty wives) was to mount his horses shoes backwards so that enemy armies would think he was traveling in the other direction. Pretty tricky my kind of dude.

I thought that leaving Zacatecas ment the last of cool towns but I was wrong. As we continue heading north we starting to see more the Mexico from movies. Dry dusty towns with tumble weeds. Cuencame had such an interesting name we opted to stay for two nights. Also ¨mis nagas esta dolor¨

The next night we slept in a random town called La punta. Duzer worked some magic and we got to spend the night in the La punta after school center. It was quite a Mexico experience and being the first Gingos to visit ment that we were very popular especially with the kids who followed around town.

Zacatecas at 2500 meters above sea level is the highest point on out ride. We tried to get even higher by sleeping on the roof of our hostel. We had the best view in the city and paid less for it. It was wonderful feeling to wake up each day having the cathedral and the city right below us

In Aguascalietes we stopped for some repairs Duzer need a new tire and I broke another spoke. At the bike shop we found this low rider, boy would that go over well at the Cuzer ride.

After Guanajuato we headed north to Zacatecas. We thought it would be a four day ride but it turned out to be only 2 1/2 days Lucky us. Duzer is usually pushing ahead while I hang back lost in my thoughts, however every once in a while I get a head and this is a commons sight I see.

My first impression of Guanajuato was from below the city. We entered the city via a labyrinth of tunnels.
I didn´t know where we going and I got tired of riding on cobble stones. We lucky exited the labyrinth right in the best spot.

The central part next to the main cathedral in Morelia is very quite a nice hang out and enjoy some ice cream. On this trip I find my self eating ice cream quite often.

After Patzcauro we road to Morelia it was a nice leisurely ride and only took about 3 hours.
Morelia is a great city it´s full of youthful energy. You can find students practicing music in the parks at all hour of the day.

The Native Dances of the area dress up with masks, canes and wooden shoes which make a lot of noise when they strike the ground. They dance around while acting like they they are elderly people.

El dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday which as far as I know does not exist any where else in the world. Basically, it is a huge party to show respect for dead loved ones and it has roots that date back before the arrivals of the Spanish. Starting on the 1st of November, relatives gather at the graves of loved ones around the country (The many small towns around Patzcuaro are known for having the liveliest celebrations in the country.) They bring flowers and favorite foods of the deiced to the grave yards and decorate their tombs with them. They also bring many candles and many of them sleep with at the grave yards next to their dead relatives. (It kind of reminds me of when I was at Gold Hill Elementary and we used to sleep in the grave yard to scare our selves. The main difference here is that theses people are not doing it to be scared they believe that their loved ones are still around and would never do any thing to harm them.)

During a wonderful four hour up hill ride from Uruapan to Patzcuaro we passed by thousands of Avocado orchards. Uruapan is famous for inventing Guacamole and produces billion of tons of Avocados every year. Needless to say they were cheap to buy and I ate a few dozen.

Uruapan... It was a long hall and a little out of our way to get here from the Desert. We gained alot of altitude. But when we took our first bits of fresh tamales and cool ice cream while sitting in the town square it all became worth it.

We stopped for water and bananas near a town called Nueva Italia. We coundn´t find bananas but we did find grapefruits, this town if famous for grapefruits and they were giving them away.

Another thing that is hard to find is good food on the road. Just like the states road food sucks. We have to eat a lot of junk food just to keep on going.

It can be hard to find some things in Mexico especailly big highways that are not on the map. This High way costs alot for cars but is free for bikes. It´s a wounderful road and could only be better if they would stop trying to trick us with the mileage signs.

Well I was wrong we did get one more sun set over the ocean before heading in land for the rest of the trip. Tronconess is a nice little surfer village about 25 miles north of Zihuatanejo. I definatly recommend it.

We found a ¨Bike path¨ it might the only one in Mexico I´m not sure. This path lead us from Zihuatanejo to Ixtapa about 7 km long. We were so excited that we forgot to check were we where going and got a little lost.

One thing I have noticed since arriving is the temperature of the Ocean. Where I stated out in Zipolite the Ocean was hot. Here in Zihuatenjo the ocean is still warm howerer it is a lot cooler then just a few hundred miles south of here. I can´t wait to jump in the ocean back in Vancouver were it will be almost freezing. This will probably be our last beach town for the rest of the trip which is quite sad because we have been enjoying the relaxing and meeting other travelers in these beach towns.

We road about 100 miles north of Pie de la Causta to a very smalled village called Ojo de Agua. We meet some nice people and this parrot tried to eat our bread. Unfortunatly my tent fell off my bike and I had to sleep in a hammock, not so bad. Now I´m looking for another one.

Pie de la Cuesta is a nice little beach town about 10 kilometers north of Acapulco. We stayed here for two days and met some very friendly Germans who are studying to be doctors. (However they could not identify the bumps are Duzer`s shoulder which now seem to be moving.) We gave them the low down on traveling in Central America and how to prepare a biker meal.

The old town or Zocolo is characterized by a beautiful square with a large church at one end. The Duzer and I found a nice hotel near here for 7 buck a night. Being in Acapulco we were constantly surrounded by good food. I found it hard to avoid eating everything.

One of the most famous attractions in Acapulco is the cliff divers. At first I thought that I might not be worth my 30 pesos. However I was happily impressed, these guys dive head first into a very small pool from very high up. Equally impressive was the rock climbing they did to get back up the rock.

Incredible, this city is one of the most hap´in places I have ever been. The night life here is like no where else I have been in Mexico thus far. Last night was a Duzzy for sure. I left Ryan in the Hotel room around 10 pm because he just wasn´t feel it and hit the town by my self. I jumped on a party bus (which are stand buses only they have florescent lights and loud music) and headed for the southern end of town. A few hours later and many beers to the wind I found my self standing on a platform getting ready to jump into a swimming pool. When who should appear but a Crazy Duzaster. (I guess hagging in the hotel in Acapulco on a Saturday night is more then even a Duzer can handle don´t ask me how he found me in a city this large.) That was just the start because we didn´t make back to bed until 5 in the morning. Feel good now and ready to get back on my bike and ride.

If you are coming into Acupalco from the south the first thing you might notice is just how big this city is it´s huge. The next thing you will notice is that the high way kilometer signs will start getting bigger, which is not what one wishes for especailly if they are already tired from riding a long way. The next thing that will happen is that you will run into a huge hill which is very painful. Also there is alot of traffic here.

We make alot of stops to buy water, bananas, torttias and beans. My favorite stops are the ones where fresh sqeezed orange juice is involved. Here Duzer and I enjoy some Mexican style Gatorade in San Marcos

Playa Venture is about 93 miles south of Acupalco. We stayed here thinking that we had only 70 miles to go the next day. We found a nice hotel which let us pitch our tents for 35 pecos each, Bonus we got to use there Hammocks and bathrooms. The guide book said this town is know for having clear water which was not the case for us. This town was seemed alittle run down.

The longest and hottest I´ve ever been

On this day we road our bikes 90 miles. This is by far the furthest that I have ever road my bike in one day. We also hit some good moutains. At one point I was hotter and was sweating harder then a hippo in a sauna. We passed the above field late in the day then stayed in an stange town called Ciujiujian or something.

We left Escondido on tuesday after hanging out and making friends with the other travelers at the Hostel Sholom. We road 40 miles north (a walk in the park) to a very small town called Cerro Ermoso. They don´t get much white tourism here put people do come by from the closest town which is called Rio Grande.
We met the proprietor of this resturant and he told us it would be fine to camp here.

We are thought we would stay in Puerto Escondido for a few nights we have been here four. Today I went surfing on this beach and caught a few great waves.

While riding back to Puerto Escondido Ben and Mike drove by. Ben stuck his head out the window and said ¨you guys need a ride¨ Ben on the left was in the Peace corps with Duzer and is driving back the States with his buddy Mike. (....And no we did not take the ride)

There I am in Zipolite with my Bicycle and who do I run into but a crazy Duzer... This one´s been riding his bike for over 1300 miles. He is skinny and happy which I will soon be too.

Here I am in Puerto Escondido... it´s hot... It´s so hot I´m having a hard time believing that it could ever get cold. So far evrythings gone smooth I picked up my bike and everything works.

Now for some good old fun in the Sun... Playa Zincatela is my first desination. It´s suposed to be one of the best long board beached around. I´ll pitch me tent and do some surfing.

Hopefully tomarrow I´ll meet the Duzer He´s been riding for over 1000 miles. Boy does he need a break!

Puerto Escondido, the big wave capital of Mexico.
A place I have always wanted to visit. This time I don't have a return plane ticket, this time, I'm RIDING MY BIKE BACK with Ryan Vanduzer. When I meet him on Monday the 10th of October in Puerto Escondido, he will have already been riding his bike for three weeks from Honduras. Why am I doing this, what would promt me fly to Puerto Escondido one way. Only the Adventure of a life time and some quality time spent (two and half months) with my buddy Duzer.
